I want to sincerely thank all of you for your support in this campaign. We all worked, sacrificed, and gave the voters a clear choice. I do not want to linger on the defeat; I do want to concentrate on the next phase.

The reasons that my wife and I got into this congressional race were solid and were verified as the campaign developed. This nation, this state, and the city of San Diego seem to be eager to embrace principles and ideas that have never worked and will never work.

We do not need to go into specifics; we are all familiar with these issues. Therefore, what is the next phase? How do we counter? How can we persuade?

It seems like the nation is more inclined to cater to its abusers than its rescuers. The more we stand up for people the more those very same people turn us down. How many of your favorite candidates with clear, strong messages were defeated last Tuesday? How many people did you see being attacked just because they stood up for what you knew was the truth? Why is it hateful, racist, intolerant, mean spirited, or crazy to uphold an idea that is different from others?

It seems like a case of chronic abuse. Have you ever known an abused woman? She will defend her abuser, make excuses for her bruises, and lie to her family. She will get very emotional about why she is at fault. “If I just love him more he will stop beating me”.

When the police arrive and pull him off of her, she will fight the police. Do you wonder why? It is not lack of education; she knows he is beating her. In most cases it is not due to low self-esteem. The abused woman does not believe her rescuer will stay and help her. She is dependent (whether her need is real or imagined) upon the abuser.

The public is abused and they go to the ballot box and pick the best abuser. How else can you explain voting for a policy or party which has only brought misery, under-performing schools, gangs, and drugs? Why support a philosophy of high taxes, low employment, high crime, and high drug use and then find fault with the rescuers because they do not bring more benefits? This is an abused nation no longer thinking like free, independent people.

But just like that abused woman, sooner or later they will have had enough. If they have had enough you will not need to rescue them. We must build safe houses for the abused women to escape. We need a safe house for the abused Americans to find peace. We need a sanctuary.

The fight never ends so fighters never stop. Our beliefs are right. Our beliefs deserves to be defended. Look for the next phases as we defend The American Beliefs.

“Stay Right or be Left!”

(1) Introduction

Last month I heard a dynamic, intelligent and patriotic candidate describe how our country had forgotten that God had given us inalienable rights including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They were inalienable because they were not given by man but by God and that men could not give them or take them away. He said that we, as Americans, need to wake up and stop being afraid of our own heritage as country built on faith. He called for us to regain our integrity and to fight for what we believe.

I was impressed. I was very impressed. The candidate was a conservative and I am a tea party member. He inspired me as few public speakers had inspired me for a long time. As a result I started following him and his campaign. His name is Clarence Mason Weaver and he is running for the United States Congress in the 53rd Congressional District in San Diego, California.

Recently, I received an email about a website that claims to be dedicated to exposing lies made by Mr. Weaver about his life and in his campaign. The email included an internet address and asked if it was true. Because I write investigative research reports on tea party issues and publish them on www.our-republic.net, I receive this kind of heads up from time to time. This particular request caught my eye as important for several reasons, but one overriding value.

There is an on-going effort to paint tea party participants, paraphrasing our President, as “typically bitter old white men hanging desperately to God and our guns.” President Obama, former President Carter, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and a myriad of other political figures in the Democratic Party and on the left have said that “tea baggers” and conservatives, like myself, are racist.

Racism is a loaded accusation. I am a citizen of a country that has a racist history most recently promoted politically, during my lifetime, by members of the same Democratic Party that says I am a racist. I am part of a generation that decided that overt racism needed to be rooted out of our country before I die. I say overt racism, because I acknowledge that prejudice in all its forms will be here for as long as men, of any identity, express the meanness of their souls about those they feel are not the same as them.

One of the reasons I so love America is because I have worked with so many Americans insuring our civil rights, our liberties, our freedom and our national security. Some of those Americans no longer live and gave their lives in that purpose. At the beginning of this research I reasoned, if the allegations against Mr. Weaver would turn out to be true, Mr. Weaver needs to be stopped and exposed. If they are not true, this website’s accusations are not just vicious attacks; but, the heart and soul of what prejudice is really about. Hatred.

(2) The Target Website: Starting At The Beginning?

The internet address for the target website had an address that was almost exactly the same as that of the candidate’s campaign:

C. Manson Weaver’s campaign site URL: www.cmasonweaverforcongress.com.

Target site URL: www.masonweaverforcongress.com.

This is clearly intentional and it guarantees that search engines will pull it up and get it confused with the candidates own site. It also guarantees that the sites headline shows up at the start of internet search engine searches like that in Figure 1.

Figure 1: A Google search pulls up the target site and its message, “Liar Running
For Congress in San Diego” is second out of 292,000 links and immediately
after the candidates own website. This is intentional.

The website title, programmed into the website code is “C. Mason Weaver For Congress – Liar Running For Congress In San Diego (CA-53) and it shows up in searches as a headline and as the title to every window that one opens to the site

When you open the target site link, the headline is “Clarence Mason Weaver, Liar, unemployed, Failed Author & Congressional Candidate.” It then has buttons to topics including: Legal Violations, Lies, News and Press Releases.

I and most Americans are very grateful to our veterans for protecting our freedom. I am especially moved by veterans, as a Christian, because I believe our Lord told us that, “No greater love hath any man, than he lay down his life for another.” I decided to start my research into the validity of these accusations with the target website’s first claim, “Mason Weaver is touting his record as a Vietnam Combat Veteran” because that would be the single most damning fact to me.

The videos on the campaign site were all reviewed without any difference to the text results.

The next step was to see what claims were made in the past and in other venues.
I and others searching thousands of links and making multiple searches have not found one reference to Mr. C.
Mr. Weaver has clearly claimed to be a Vietnam War veteran and has been cited by others as a Vietnam War veteran. The only reference to a citation was the one by the Vietnamese American Veterans Association that says that he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star and publically thanked him for it.
Figure 5: The page title is “Lying About Serving in Vietnam.”

Under the title is a picture of a woman, apparently in a protest, holding two large and prominent black and white signs that said “LIAR.” The impression is clear. The photo seems to be people protesting the candidate’s lies.

Underneath the “Liar” photo, the text starts with,

“On many occasions, Mason Weaver has falsely claimed to have been a “Veteran of the Vietnam War” and a “Combat Veteran.” He has continued to make such claims, despite outcries from several highly respected veterans organizations, including the well known Combat Veterans For Congress PAC.

To make such fictitious and exaggerated claims about his term of military service, or how he really received his medical discharge from the Navy, is a clear disservice to those who have sacrificed their lives in service to their country.”

I know about the existence of the Combat Veterans For Congress political action committee or PAC because they endorse a number of candidates I know and support in the San Diego area. So the assertion that this group had raised outcries about Mason Weaver was quite a surprise and a very great concern. So what had Mason Weaver done in the service? The page in the target website said,

“Mason Weaver’s military service history record is very simple and easy to follow; his military record is that of a simple radio repairman (RM1).

The position Mr. Weaver had on the USS Samuel Gompers is defined by the Division R1. Division R1 on US naval ships is the ship fitters shop. All naval personnel up to pay grade E-3 are considered apprentices for the rating they and are being educated and trained to obtain the rating at pay grade E-4.

The real question is why the target site left out the duties on the USS Samuel Gompers? Mr. Weaver says he was a ship fitter in Division R1 on the USS Gompers and was injured there. The ship fitters shop works with huge thick slabs of steel and aluminum and is a very dangerous environment. If Mr. Weaver is portrayed as a simple reckless radioman accidently hit by a slab of steel,

“…his military record is that of a simple radio repairman (RM1). One who was relieved from duty after being reckless on the job, recklessness which resulted in an accident where a large piece of steel fell on to him, leaving him unable to work and temporarily disabled.”

The reader is left with a very different impression than a more accurate description would leave. For example,

While on the USS Gompers, Mason Weaver worked in the ship fitters shop where structural steel and ship system piping fabrication occurred. Mr. Weaver was involved in an accident where a large piece of steel fell on him, disabled him and permanently ended his ship fitting career in the US Navy.

The claim about the Navy investigation resulting in a charge of recklessness, has not yet been independently substantiated or denied. Mr. Weaver maintains he was deliberately attacked.

The point is the target website leaves the impression that reckless Mr. Weaver, the simple radioman, was somehow recklessly wandering in a dangerous metal working area when a large metal plate fell on him and caused him some temporary disability.

(6) Was C. Mason Weaver a Vietnam Veteran?

The question concerning Mason Weaver’s service is what allows one to be called a veteran, a Vietnam War veteran or a combat veteran? It was clear that even the writer of the target website acknowledged that the candidate C. Mason Weaver had been a veteran. That is, he was enlisted in the United States Navy and had served his country as a member of the military.

The next question is what did Mr. Weaver do while in the navy and did that make him a Vietnam veteran or a combat veteran (even though I can find no evidence that Mason Weaver has ever called himself a combat veteran or evidence that anyone else has called him a combat veteran except this target website)?

The target website says,

“From 1968-1969, Mason Weaver worked on the repair ship USS Klondike (AR-22), which repaired vessels in San Diego, Long Beach and San Francisco.

Then, from 1969-1971, Mason Weaver served on the USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37), a floating repair shop for ships of the U.S. Navy either, in port or at sea. The Samuel Gompers operated in the San Diego area until March 13, 1970, when she deployed to the Western Pacific. Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines, was her base of operations for servicing fleet units until returning to San Diego on September 13, 1970, where she remained through November of 1971.”

The multiple records we found, including crew lists cited previously show that Mason Weaver was assigned according to the following table.

These dates are important to the Vietnam veteran question if they conflict with either ship’s service dates in the Vietnam War zone.

USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37)

The USS Samuel Gompers was researched first (for no special reason). The target website link led to a Wikipedia article about the ship

“Samuel Gompers operated in the San Diego area until 13 March 1970 when she again deployed to the western Pacific. Subic Bay was her base of operations for servicing fleet units until returning to San Diego on 13 September 1970. She remained there until 2 November 1971 when she steamed west on another deployment.

After making port calls at Pearl Harbor and Yokosuka, she moored at Subic Bay on 24 November. The tender operated out of that port until 12 July 1972 when she sailed for Pearl Harbor and San Diego. During the seven-month deployment period, Samuel Gompers made two trips to Da Nang, South Vietnam, from 9 to 16 April; and from 22 to 30 April.

When she reached her home port on 31 July, she remained there to provide repair services to fleet units until mid-July 1973. At this time, she moved up the coast to Portland, Oregon, and was in dry dock having significant modifications to service areas far below the waterline. She was reported to be the largest vessel ever to cruise up the Columbia River. The Gompers remained there until returning to San Diego in early December.” [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Samuel_Gompers_(AD-37)]

During the time both the target site and Mr. Weaver say he served on board the Gompers, it was not directly involved in the Vietnam War and the ship did not go to Vietnam until after Mason Weaver had left the US Navy. The ship was a destroyer repair ship and traveled all over, but was harbored most often in Subic Bay in the Philippines. There is independent verification that Clarence Mason (Weaver) was on board and left the USS Samuel Gompers in August 1971, before the Gompers went to Vietnam and received a Vietnam War unit citation.

USS Klondike (AR-22)

The USS Klondike link on the target website also led to an article on Wikipedia.

“Klondike continued to repair the ships of the Pacific Fleet into mid-1969. Her last Far Eastern deployment began on 25 February 1969 when she departed San Diego. The Klondike made two trips to Portland, Oregon for the annual Rose Festival, in 1967 and 1968. She also make a WESTPAC cruise in 1967/1968.”

This account provides no means of understanding the WESTPAC operations the ship participated in during Mason Weavers service. The references given in the Wikipedia article revealed that there was a difference between the previously mentioned crew list accounts for the period 1968 and 1969 and the Wikipedia article content for the same period.

Further, in the unit history section of military.com a crew member, Lloyd Kessinger, posted,

“On many occasions, Mason Weaver has falsely claimed to have been a “Veteran of the Vietnam War” and a “Combat Veteran.” He has continued to make such claims, despite outcries from several highly respected veterans organizations, including the well known Combat Veterans For Congress PAC.”

Multiple internet searches revealed not one single indication that the Combat Veterans For Congress PAC has ever issued an outcry about C. Mason Weaver. To complete the issue during the research phase, I wrote the following message, seeking information, to the Combat Veterans For Congress PAC using the contact page on their website,

“Dear Combat Veterans.

First of all thank you for your service and your stand for our constitution and our country. I am Kenneth Happel and I publish a website that does investigative reports into tea party issues [www.our-republic.net]. I am writing a report for the website and I may publish the report in the San Diego Examiner (nonpartisan reporter) as well. I can be reached at 760-630-3332 / kmhappel@cox.net. I also run an independent, non-partisan precinct working tea party [www.vistateapartypatriots] group and am trying to find out, to the degree possible, the truth.

I am looking into a website that has recently appeared and is clearly intended to discredit and damage the campaign of a C. Mason Weaver who is running against your endorsed candidate, Michael Crimmins, and another Republican candidate, Anderson.

The website [http://www.masonweaverforcongress.com/category/lies/] uses candidate weaver’s name and format so that it’s URL is one letter different than candidate Mason Weaver’s own campaign website and creates both confusion and makes devastating claims.

Among other things, this website claims:

“On many occasions, Mason Weaver has falsely claimed to have been a “Veteran of the Vietnam War” and a “Combat Veteran.” He has continued to make such claims, despite outcries from several highly respected veterans organizations, including the well known Combat Veterans For Congress PAC.

To make such fictitious and exaggerated claims about his term of military service, or how he really received his medical discharge from the Navy, is a clear disservice to those who have sacrificed their lives in service to their country.

Mason Weaver’s military service history record is very simple and easy to follow; his military record is that of a simple radio repairman (RM1). One who was relieved from duty after being reckless on the job, recklessness which resulted in an accident where a large piece of steel fell on to him, leaving him unable to work and temporarily disabled.”

I was wondering if such outcry had occurred from Combat Veterans For Congress and in what form. This website lists your website as a reference link, implying that you agree and that is why I am writing you directly. There is a picture on this site that leads one to think it may be a picture of people in your group protesting Mr. Weaver. They are carrying large signs saying “Liar!” The article title is, “Lying About Serving in the Vietnam War.”

Mr. Weaver has said “…I had served in Vietnam”, “As a disabled veteran of the Vietnam War…” and has had written about him “his years as a Vietnam veteran in the U.S. Navy.” I have not yet found any reference where he says or he claims he was a “combat veteran” of any kind.

I have been able to verify that Mr. Weaver was stationed in Subic Bay on the USS Samuel Gompers (DA 37) during the Vietnam War and worked on naval ships, both in Subic Bay and at sea that were directly and indirectly engaged in the conflict. He certainly was engaged as a seaman in support of naval operations that included Vietnam. I would like to understand how your organization sees such overseas service.

The article on the website states that he was a “radio man RM-1.” While I have not yet obtained an official copy of his military records, during my research, I have found multiple sources including veteran’s meet-up and crew list websites where he was a ship-fitter (GS). I have also found multiple references to him, about him and from him about being on board and having been injured on board while in service.

I don’t know why this route was chosen by those opposed to Mr. Weaver, but the result is very damaging to those of us who hope a conservative, limited constitutional government, fiscally responsible candidate will get elected to be the candidate…

If you have not issued the public “outcry” referred to on the site, would you issue a public denial and include me in you broadcast. I will make abundantly clear that your organization is blameless. If you did, may I have a copy of the public “outcry”?

Thanks once again,

The Combat Veterans For Congress answered [the color and text formatting is as received],

“Kenneth,

Thank you for your interest in the Combat Veterans For Congress PAC. We do not denounce any Veteran or any Combat Veteran; we honor all veterans for their patriotic service to their country. We do respond to requests for accurate information on any individual who says he is a Combat Veteran. We were asked to comment on whether Mason Weaver was a Combat Veteran by a party whose identity is held in strict confidence. We responded that Mason Weaver is not Combat Veteran using the definition that DOD uses; we also specifically told Mason Weaver that although he was not a Combat Veteran and could not endorse his candidacy when he asked for our endorsement, that we honored his military service to his country during the Vietnam conflict. Mr. Weaver has not been awarded a Combat Action Ribbon, a medal with Combat “V”, a Purple Heart Medal, or any other medal awarded for gallant action in combat.

They clearly state that they do not denounce or make outcries about veterans and that Mr. Weaver is a veteran. Therefore, the target website is incorrect. They acknowledge C. Mason Weaver as a veteran during the Vietnam conflict and detail the difference between being a Vietnam veteran and a combat veteran. Having received a Combat Action Ribbon is defined as the Department of Defense criteria for being a combat veteran.

What is a combat action ribbon? “The Combat Action Ribbon (CAR) is a personal military decoration of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps which is awarded to those who, in any grade including and below that of a Captain in the Navy (or Colonel in the Marine Corps), have actively participated in ground or surface combat. The Combat Action Ribbon is also awarded to members of the United States Coast Guard when operating under the control of the Navy.”[http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/Combat_Action_Ribbon].

Tea Party Movement Top Party Despite Skewed Questions and Sample

Prejudiced Opinion Poll Backfires on Democrats, Sets Tea Parties as Leader

MSNBC and the Wall Street Journal polled 1008 adults with the following question:

“As you may know, this year saw the start of something known as the Tea Party movement. In this movement, citizens, most of whom are conservatives, participated in demonstrations in Washington, DC, and other cities, protesting government spending, the economic stimulus package, and any type of tax increases. From what you know about this movement, is your opinion of it very positive, somewhat positive, neutral, somewhat negative, or very negative? If you do not know enough to have an opinion, please say so.”

The results from this poll surprised the media and especially Chris Matthews of MSNBC:

MSNBC’s Chris Mathews became quite upset over the results of the poll. Specifically, Mathews was upset that the Tea Party Movement was viewed quite a bit more favorably than the two major political parties by those polled, especially in higher strong positives and lower strong negatives.

Matthews tried to discredit the results as being caused by a biased poll question working in the Tea Partiers’ favor. But the facts are against Matthews. The poll question about the tea party says “most of whom are conservatives” and invalidates the question’s neutrality because it tries to politically color the movement as even more right than the Republican Party. Tom Blumer (2009) described the question’s effect as.

“The question’s wording works to create an advance negative impression among those — even liberals mugged by the reality of the Obama administration’s spending increases — who have been conditioned to be averse to anything described as ‘conservative.’ Additionally, the TPM has a strong libertarian streak; many libertarians are disinclined to look favorably at anything characterized as conservative.”

Further, the poll asked its particpants:

“Generally speaking, do you think of yourself as a Democrat, a Republican, an independent, or something else? (IF “DEMOCRAT” OR “REPUBLICAN,” ASK:) Would you call yourself a strong (Democrat/Republican) or not a very strong (Democrat/Republican)? (IF “INDEPENDENT,” ASK:) Do you think of yourself as closer to the Republican Party, closer to the Democratic Party, or do you think of yourself as strictly independent?”

The result shows a strong Democratic bias in the sample population.

A sample with 22% strong Democrats only represents one thing: A sample that should be thrown out.

Mathews’s contention that the poll favored the TPM is self-evidently ludicrous on not just one but two levels.

The NBC/WSJ poll Mathews disputes as would have turned into a TPM rout if the movement had been properly described (or alternatively, not described at all), and if the poll’s sample had been truly representative.

As you all know, the absentee voter ballots are in the mail and many people will begin casting their votes now. This election may very well be won or lost in the next few days. I have asked my friend, Ronald Reagan Attorney General Edwin Meese, to record a commercial message for the absentee voters. Listen to it below and tell me if you do not agree that it is powerful:

I need to run ads on the all important Roger Hedgecock, Rick Roberts, Rick Amado, and Mark Larson radio shows. I will also be reaching absentee voters with direct phone calls. I know many of you have already donated to my campaign, but I must ask for you assistance one more time. Please consider donating online at https://www.completecampaigns.com/FR/contribute.asp?campaignid=WeaverMason or directly from the website at http://www.cmasonweaverforcongress.com/contribute/.

These are crucial times and this is a crucial election. I am the only one who can beat Susan Davis, but I must be sent by you. Thank you for your help. I look forward to your feedback on the Edwin Meese radio message.

Thank you in advance,
Mason

Why I am the only one who can beat Susan Davis

Now that the filing period has passed, we can look at the candidates to see who can defeat Susan Davis on the Republican ticket. I entered this race with that question in mind. Who will get the support of the Party? Who will excite our base? Who can pull from the Susan Davis base? Who can excite the voters, defend the issues and lead a movement? Which candidate can be relied upon?

These are all good questions and this election is too important to leave them unanswered. We have good candidates running in this primary. We have strong candidates running and we have excitement. But do we have all of these elements in one candidate?

I am running because I have a history of standing for the conservative principles, past Republican party activities and a background defending the Republican positions in the public area.

- Degree from the University of California at Berkeley, 1975, Political Science.
- Served on the Executive Committee as the Second Vice Chair of the San Diego County Republican Party.
- Thousands of speeches, lectures, debates, television appearances and radio interviews on the issues, dating back over decades.
- Four published books on politics, economics/capitalism and motivation.
Tea Party speaker to over a dozen events including the massive march on D.C. on 9/12/2009.

My reputation has earned the endorsement of Ronald Reagan Attorney General Edwin Meese, Concerned Women for America, Eagle Forum, ICaucus, BAMPAC and many others. I have received the endorsement and support of elected officials, extraordinarily unusual in a contested primary. State Senator Mark Wyland, Assemblyman Chuck Devore, State Senator Bill Morrow (Ret.), Assemblyman Republican Leader Martin Garrett, Assembly members Joel Anderson, Diane Harkey, George Plescia, and many others. David Horowitz of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, business leaders such as Amway giant Dexter Yeager and Bill Britt have also endorsed this effort. Christian leaders Bishop George McKinney and Roy Dixon have also endorsed and supported me.

That is a summary of nearly 20 years of work for the Party. I will excite the base and earn the respect of Susan Davis supporters. While all of my opponents have positive qualities, none of the others can excite the base, and none can do that while also exciting the base of Susan Davis.

Michael Crimmins lost to Susan Davis by gaining only 27% of the vote in 2008. The people looked at him, vetted him and said “NO!” Since then, he has been censored and removed from the San Diego Republican Central Committee for unethical and racial behavior. It does not matter if you believe the accusations or not. The facts are, if he wins the nomination, the party will not raise money for him, will not support him and will not campaign for him. He is basically running as an Independent while still using the Republican Party name. Being removed from the Republican Party Central Committee by a 44-1 vote (only he voted to support himself) is a heavy blow to his campaign, however, he is probably the one candidate that Susan Davis would want to support and face in November 2010.

Matt Friedman is a nice young man with zero experience as a Republican activist. His support of Same Sex Marriage will turn off the base and they will stay home. It does not matter how you feel on the matter, the base is strongly in support of marriage being defined between one man and one woman. His dogmatic stance against the base may get some Democrat votes, but he will lose the enthusiastic support of the base.

Mari Fink is also a newcomer to politics with no background and no record. Her claim to fame is being a 7th generation San Diegan. Her major accomplishment is winning an award from a local hospital. She seems to be a great Community Organizer.

We have already tried a “Community Organizer” with no or little political experience but with plenty of money. How is that “Hope and Change” working out for you? While I have respect for Mari Fink’s community efforts, this election is too important for first timers. She does not have any history of an indication that she can withstand the Union attacks and the media smears surely to come to any nomination.

Folks, we have one more election cycle to save our nation, and that singular chance occurs in the primaries, not in the general election. We cannot take a chance on unexcited, un-motivating and inexperienced candidates. If you have had enough of guessing, enough of being lied to, enough of seeing your beliefs go undefended, then join me and let’s go take back our nation.

If you send me I will serve you. We will win on “Eleven-Two-Ten.” C. Mason Weaver for Congress.
